The different types of sparkling wine: An overview of the different styles of sparkling wine

Sparkling wine is not the same as sparkling wine, and this applies not only to the grape varieties and regions of origin, but also to the different styles, which range from dry to sweet. In this blog post, we take a look at the different types of sparkling wine and explain the differences between Brut, Extra Brut, Sec, Demi-Sec and Doux.

Brut:

Brut is the most widespread style of sparkling wine and is considered “dry”. It contains very little residual sugar, usually less than 12 grams per litre. Brut is characterised by its refreshing acidity and the emphasised fruit aromas. This style suits well for many occasions and is a popular companion to appetisers and seafood.

Extra Brut is even drier than Brut and contains less than 6 grams of residual sugar per litre. It is particularly crisp and refreshing, which emphasises its minerality and freshness. Extra Brut is ideal as an aperitif and is ideal for those who prefer a very dry taste.

Sec:

Although the name “Sec” means “dry” in French, this sparkling wine is actually semi-dry to slightly sweet. It usually contains between 17 and 32 grams of residual sugar per litre. Sec sparkling wine is softer and more fruity than Brut and is well suited for desserts and light main courses.

Demi-Sec:

Demi-Sec is a sweeter sparkling wine with 32 to 50 grams of residual sugar per litre. This style offers a pleasant balance between sweetness and acidity and is a perfect companion to fruity desserts or mild cheeses.

Doux:

Doux is the sweetest sparkling wine, with more than 50 grams of residual sugar per litre. It is rich, syrupy and often with intense aromas of honey and dried fruits. Doux is ideal as an aperitif or as a dessert wine with chocolate creations and ripe, strong cheeses.
