What is Franciacorta?

Sparkling wine, and much more. The name Franciacorta stands for a promise of quality and Italian elegance. Like champagne, Franciacorta is produced exclusively using traditional bottle fermentation. The grape varieties, microclimate, and passion of small producers give it a personality all its own: soft, complex, with a fine perlage and remarkable depth. Once you've tried Franciacorta, you'll immediately understand why it's considered an insider tip among connoisseurs.

Origin and growing region: The wine region in Lombardy

The Franciacorta wine region is located in northern Italy's Lombardy region, south of Lake Iseo, surrounded by rolling hills and characterized by a temperate climate. The calcareous soils and proximity to the Alps create ideal conditions for elegant sparkling wines with depth and finesse. Since the 1960s, the region has developed into a center of high-quality sparkling wine production—with an uncompromising commitment to quality, craftsmanship, and origin. Only sparkling wines made from grapes grown in the Franciacorta region are allowed to bear the name Franciacorta.

Differences from Prosecco and Champagne

Franciacorta, like champagne, is produced using the traditional bottle fermentation method. This means that the second fermentation, which gives the wine its fine perlage, takes place in the bottle and not in stainless steel tanks as with Prosecco. While Prosecco is usually young, fruity, and uncomplicated, Franciacorta is characterized by complexity, structure, and aging potential. Compared to Champagne, it often seems a bit softer, creamier, and more accessible without losing any depth.

Franciacorta DOCG – A seal of quality with history

Since 1995, Franciacorta has carried Italy's highest designation of origin: DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita). This seal stands for the strictest production standards, limited yields, and complete control from harvest to bottling. A Franciacorta may only be produced with hand-picked grapes and must mature on the lees for at least 18 months. For vintage Franciacorta or Riserva, this period is even longer.

Our selection of Franciacorta sparkling wines

Whether elegant and fresh, soft and creamy or mature with depth, our selection of Franciacorta wines combines the stylistic diversity of this exceptional sparkling wine region. Each wine has been carefully tasted and selected by us with an eye for quality, origin, and expression. From characterful Brut to silky Satèn and mature vintage cuvées, you will find Franciacorta for every occasion and every taste.

Franciacorta Brut – The classic for every occasion

Franciacorta Brut is the timeless classic among Italian sparkling wines. With its fine perlage, citrus freshness, and subtle notes of brioche and white flowers, it is just as suitable for a festive reception as it is for an enjoyable evening. A sparkling wine for those who like it straightforward, stylish, and high-quality, and the perfect introduction to the world of Franciacorta.

Franciacorta Satèn – The elegant, creamy variant

Satèn is a specialty that is unique to Franciacorta and a real insider tip for anyone who loves velvety textures and delicate aromas. Made from 100% white grapes (mostly Chardonnay) and bottled at reduced pressure, Satèn is particularly soft, silky, and almost flattering on the palate. Ideal with fine dishes, creamy starters, or simply for a stylish moment in between meals.

Vintage Franciacorta for connoisseurs

Vintage Franciacorta, also known as Millesimato, is aged on the lees for at least 30 months and reflects the characteristics of an outstanding harvest year. These cuvées display depth, complexity, and aging potential. They are ideal for collectors, sommeliers, and anyone who wants to experience Franciacorta at its best.

The taste of Franciacorta – flavor profile and style

Franciacorta stands for sparkling wine with character: dry, elegant, and with a fine perlage. The aromas range from fresh citrus fruit to ripe apples and delicate yeast notes, depending on the grape variety, vinification, and aging. What unites all varieties is the balance of finesse, depth, and Italian lightness.

Grape varieties, aromas, and effervescence

Franciacorta is mainly made from Chardonnay, Pinot Nero (Pinot Noir) and, to a lesser extent, Pinot Bianco. The cuvée composition determines the style, which ranges from mineral and fresh to full-bodied and complex. Typical aromas of Franciacorta are:
  • Citrus, green apples, pear
  • White flowers, almonds, honey
  • Brioche, yeast, delicate toasted notes with longer aging
A consistent trademark of Franciacorta sparkling wines is the fine, elegant perlage, which is created by traditional bottle fermentation.

Food pairing: What goes well with Franciacorta?

Franciacorta is a versatile accompaniment to food. Depending on its style, it pairs wonderfully with
  • antipasti, seafood, and sushi
  • creamy pasta dishes and risotto
  • Poultry, veal, or mild cheese
  • As a satin wine with fine starters and desserts
Tip: Try Franciacorta Rosé with grilled fish or Mediterranean cuisine.

Tips for the perfect drinking temperature

Franciacorta develops its aroma best when well chilled – but not ice cold. Ideal temperatures are:
  • 6–8°° C for young, fresh cuvées (e.g., Brut or Satèn)
  • 8–10°° C for mature vintage Franciacorta or rosé
It is best to use champagne or white wine glasses with a slight belly. This allows the perlage to unfold elegantly.
