What is Prosecco?

Prosecco is Italy's most popular sparkling wine. But there is much more to this well-known name than just sparkling lightness.

Origin, grape varieties, and quality levels

Prosecco comes from northeastern Italy, mainly from Veneto and Friuli. The main grape variety is Glera. It is complemented by a few other varieties. There are two quality levels: Prosecco DOC and Prosecco DOCG.

The difference between Prosecco DOC and DOCG

DOCG Prosecco comes from a smaller, controlled area with stricter guidelines, such as Valdobbiadene or Asolo. The grapes must be harvested by hand, and production is particularly quality-oriented. DOCG therefore stands for top quality that is characteristic of its origin. DOC Prosecco is more widespread and ideal for uncomplicated enjoyment.

How does Prosecco differ from sparkling wine or champagne?

Prosecco impresses with its lightness, elegance, and suitability for everyday drinking. It is usually produced using the tank fermentation method (Charmat method). This makes it fresh, fruity, and ready to drink earlier. Sekt is produced in different ways, but often with shorter storage times. Champagne, on the other hand, is fermented in the bottle like Franciacorta, is more complex and usually more expensive.

Frequently asked questions about Prosecco

Prosecco is an Italian sparkling wine or semi-sparkling wine made from the Glera grape variety, usually from Veneto or Friuli. It is synonymous with fresh, light enjoyment and a fine perlage.
Prosecco is usually produced using the Charmat method. This means that the second fermentation, which gives the wine its fine bubbles, takes place in stainless steel tanks. This method preserves the freshness and fruity aromas.
Prosecco is fermented in tanks, is fresher and can be drunk earlier. Sparkling wine has different production methods, champagne matures in the bottle and is usually more complex – but also more expensive.
The two most important levels are Prosecco DOC (broader growing area, good basic quality) and Prosecco DOCG (e.g. Valdobbiadene – more strictly controlled, higher quality).
These terms indicate the residual sugar content and thus how dry or sweet the Prosecco tastes:
  • Extra Brut: very dry (up to 6 g/l residual sugar)
  • Brut: dry, clear and fresh (up to 12 g/l)
  • Extra Dry: slightly fruity, with a delicate residual sweetness (12–17 g/l)
  • Dry: significantly sweeter (17–32 g/l), but still finely sparkling and elegant
The names can be misleading. "Extra Dry" is sweeter than "Brut."
Prosecco comes in two varieties: Prosecco Spumante (sparkling wine with higher pressure) and Prosecco Frizzante (semi-sparkling wine with less carbon dioxide). Most high-quality Prosecchi are Spumante.
Prosecco is best served chilled in a tulip-shaped glass that preserves the perlage. Prosecco is excellent as an aperitif or with light dishes.
With a good seal, opened Prosecco will stay fresh in the refrigerator for about 1–2 days. After that, it loses its carbonation significantly.
Prosecco is best enjoyed well chilled. The ideal temperature is 6–8 °C. This allows the fruit, freshness, and effervescence to develop perfectly.
Unopened Prosecco stays fresh for about 1–2 years, depending on the style and storage conditions. Vintage or higher-quality cuvées can also mature a little longer.
Many Prosecco wines are vegan, but not all. Look for the relevant information in the product description or ask us directly.
Yes, we offer commission solutions on request for larger parties or events. Just get in touch with us.
Yes—like any wine, Prosecco can go bad if it is left open for too long or stored incorrectly. Pay attention to the smell, taste, and color.
Yes, like most wines, Prosecco contains sulfites, which help stabilize it. The content is within legal limits and is declared on the label.
Yes, there is a growing selection of organic Prosecco wines that are produced sustainably and close to nature. You can find a curated selection here.
Prosecco goes well with antipasti, fish, salads, and mild cheeses. Rosé Prosecco pairs well with Mediterranean cuisine and fruity desserts.
Prosecco Rosé is made from Glera and a small amount of Pinot Nero (Pinot Noir). It is fruitier, more structured and a real eye-catcher in terms of color.
Yes – many wineries offer practical 0.2 l bottles or cans for on the go, picnics, or events. Ideal for individual servings or as a gift.
Yes, on request we ship at a stable temperature, especially in summer or for higher-quality cuvées. This ensures that the wine remains at its best.
Prices for good Prosecco start at around €8–10 per bottle. High-quality DOCG cuvées or organic varieties cost between €12 and €20, depending on the cultivation method and origin.
Yes, especially in the Valdobbiadene DOCG area, there are single-vineyard Prosecco wines ("Rive") with an indication of origin and individual terroir character.
