What makes champagne so special?

Champagne is regarded worldwide as the epitome of luxury and elegance. There are good reasons for this, far beyond the name. Strict rules and elaborate production make it a sparkling wine that has earned its exceptional status. See for yourself.

Origin, tradition and protected designation

Champagne may only be produced in the region of the same name in north-eastern France, according to precisely defined rules and only with approved grape varieties. The protected designation of origin (AOC) ensures that every genuine champagne comes from Champagne and meets the highest quality standards.

Difference between champagne, sparkling wine and crémant

Champagne, sparkling wine and crémant differ in the way they are produced: Champagne, like Cava and Franciacorta, is always fermented in the bottle and matures much longer than most sparkling wines or crémants. While crémant is often fresher and more accessible and sparkling wine can vary in style, champagne stands for depth, structure and ageing potential - with a particularly fine perlage.

Classic bottle fermentation explained

The second fermentation in the bottle - also known as the "méthode traditionnelle" - produces the fine perlage that makes Champagne so unmistakable. After bottling the still base wines with a little sugar and yeast, a new fermentation begins in each bottle, producing natural carbon dioxide. The typical aromas of brioche, roasted nuts, yeast and fine spice develop during the subsequent maturation period on the lees (at least 15 months, often 3 years or more for vintage champagnes). Regular riddling (remuage) and subsequent disgorging (removal of the lees) perfect the mouthfeel - for structure, depth and elegance in the glass.

Frequently asked questions about champagne

Champagne is a sparkling wine from the region of the same name in France, produced using traditional bottle fermentation. Only wines produced there with AOC certification can be called Champagne.
Champagne is always fermented in the bottle and matures for longer - this ensures a particularly fine perlage and complex aromas. Crémant is similar, but comes from other French regions. Sparkling wine and Prosecco vary greatly in production, style and origin.
Using the méthode traditionnelle: The first fermentation is followed by the second in the bottle, during which carbon dioxide is naturally produced. The champagne then matures on the lees for at least 15 months - for structure and a variety of aromas.
The main grape varieties for Champagne are Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. The exact cuvée composition determines the style and character, from fresh and mineral to powerful and structured.
These terms describe the sugar content.
  • Brut is dry (up to 12 g/l),
  • Extra Brut is even drier (up to 6 g/l),
  • Demi-Sec is significantly sweeter (32-50 g/l).
There is also Brut Nature or Zero Dosage (without added sugar) and Doux (very sweet).
Many champagnes are vegan or organically grown, but not all. Look out for the corresponding labels. In our store, vegan and organic champagnes are labeled accordingly.
Champagne can be kept unopened for several years, depending on the style and storage. Opened bottles should be drunk within 1-2 days. It is best to use a suitable champagne stopper.
Vintage champagne is produced exclusively from grapes from a specific harvest year - usually only in particularly good years. It is more complex, more structured and often matured for longer than non-vintage cuvées.
Good quality starts at around 25-30€ per bottle. Vintner champagnes, vintage or single-vineyard wines are usually between 40-80€ . For rarities or prestige cuvées, the price can be significantly higher.
Vintage champagne comes from a single harvest year and is only produced in particularly good years. It matures for longer and shows more depth, individuality and ageing potential.
Large houses produce in large quantities, often with a style typical of the brand. Vintner champagne comes directly from the producer - often smaller, more terroir-oriented and with a personal signature.
It is best stored horizontally in a dark, cool (approx. 12° C) and constant place. Avoid temperature fluctuations and light - this is how champagne retains its freshness and elegance.
Champagne is best enjoyed at 8 -10° C, ideally from a tulip-shaped glass that brings out the aromas and perlage. Flutes are visually attractive, but often too narrow in terms of aroma.
Champagne is surprisingly versatile: it goes well with seafood, sushi, poultry, truffles, mild cheese - or on its own as an aperitif. Rosé champagne harmonizes particularly well with salmon or smoked meat.
Yes, there are more and more champagne estates with organic or biodynamic certification. Organic champagnes impress with their transparency, clear style and often remarkable freshness.
Not all - it depends on the clarification method. Champagnes labeled vegan do not use animal fining agents and are declared accordingly. Look out for this when you order champagne or ask us directly!
No - real champagne always contains alcohol. Alcohol-free alternatives are not allowed to call themselves "champagne" and do not come from Champagne.
Yes, with pleasure. We offer high-quality gift packaging and can also include a personalized greeting card on request.
Rosé champagne is produced by adding red wine or short maceration periods. It often tastes fruitier, more expressive and is visually eye-catching.
By origin, ageing and style: Look out for small producers, long maturation times, precise dosage information and transparent designations of origin such as "Grand Cru" or "Premier Cru".
